I opened "A Bunch of Bows" on September 15, 2001. At the time, I wondered if I could make a go at a new business so soon after 9-11. Opening a hair bow website seemed a bit frivolous after the horrors of the attacks on the U-S. I was still working in the evenings producing the 6 and 10pm newscasts at a local television station, but what I really wanted was to stay at home with my new baby girl. I wanted this badly enough that I decided to go ahead with my plans for the business, all while coming home every evening during this time with the images of the attacks burned into my memory.

During this time, I was putting a patriotic bow on a headband for my baby girl (she was seven months old at the time) whenever I took her out of the house. It seemed to be a small way to show our patriotism during such a rough time. Every day when I would take her into the newsroom and wait for my husband to come pick her up, all my co-workers would note her bow and it would make them smile... a small way to keep spirits up while we were all working with such awful news stories.

One day during this time, I took my daughter to the post office with me. She was still in her infant carrier so I set her up on the counter as I conducted my business with the clerk. She was wearing a patriotic bow that day. While standing there, I realized that an elderly man was standing right behind me looking at my daughter. I glanced at him briefly and stopped to look more closely when I realized that he had tears in his eyes. He didn't take his eyes off my baby girl while he said to me, "I like your baby's ribbon."

I realized the tears were a reaction to the terrible events of the past few weeks, and the sight of our nation's beautiful colors on a little baby. I told him that I liked her ribbon, as well.

I have thought about this incident so many times since it happened. It made me feel so good that day, and I believe it did the same for that man who took the time to tell me how much he liked my baby's bow!

One of the most common questions that we get here at A Bunch of Bows are inquiries about how our baby/infant headbands work, so that's the subject here for today's blog!

Many of our competitors offer headbands that are indeed pretty, but the bow is permanently mounted to the headband. These headbands are usually priced in the $10-$16 range. If you want two headbands in two different colors, you'll be spending at least $30.

I still remember the first time I put a bow in my newborn baby girl's hair. She was just about a week old, and I was going to attempt to get a good photo of her for her baby announcement. She was still in the extremely skinny stage, and still looked like a golden pink peach due to the nasty jaundice that kept her in the hospital for a few extra days. What size Hair Bow is right for you? A Bunch of Bows offers hair bows in four different sizes: Newborn, Baby, Girls and Large. Below, you'll find a chart which outlines the typical age that each size bow is usually purchased for. However, bow size is definitely a matter of personal taste. The best way to determine which size is right for you is to first visualize how large you would like your bows to appear on the baby, toddler, young lady or adult for whom you are buying, and use a measuring tape or ruler to confirm the actual size. We have sold newborn sized bows for petite school aged girls, and large bows for newborns! By using the chart below, you'll know which size is best for you!

Newborn - Birth to One Year Old - Two inches and under.
Baby - Six Months to Two Years Old - 2 1/2 inches to 3 1/2 inches.
Girls - Two Years to Five Years Old - 4 to 5 inches.
Large - Five Years to Adult - Five inches and larger.
