Honor with Hair Bows?
This coming up Monday is Memorial Day. It is a day set aside to honor our men and women veterans both living and fallen. Sometime the meaning of the day is lost in the hustle and bustle of the "official start of summer". This is true for all of us as we see the exciting days of summer ahead, especially those of us with children. So what can we do to ensure that we are honoring our veterans that day? Well, historically Memorial Day was known as "Decoration Day". These were grand affairs set aside to have celebrations (decorating the town and themselves) and to decorate the grave sites of those fallen soldiers. So what can we do to celebrate the day? Well, when your daughter gets dressed for the day think about how she'll "decorate" herself. It's a good idea to keep a supply of multi-use hair bows available. Perhaps a pink camo outfit and top it off with some red, white, or blue hair bows. Spend some time with the veterans in your life. Have some fun, perhaps play for them the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy". All of these things can be great conversation starters. Imagine your daughter engaging in a conversation with the veteran in your life of "what does the flag mean to you" or "what was camo used for" or "did you play the bugle". Most veterans have a host of stories they are most willing and ready to share. Then take some time and stop by a local national cemetery. Adorn some grave sites with flowers. Who knows, this might be a new Memorial tradition for you. After all, summer can wait a day.
